The correct (and easiest) way of doing so is using -o with apt to pass dpkg option and force dpkg to ask you whether you want to retain the modified config files or the original ones. The command will be like this - sudo apt-get --reinstall -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confask" install foo This would ask you a question like Configuration file '/etc/foo/foo.conf' ==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation. Version in package is the same as at last installation. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : start a shell to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** foo.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N]

I just upgraded from 14.04LTS to 16.04.01LTS. Still finding warts. Here's this moing's: I install kmail and start it up. It reads in my old settings and talks about new account creation (why is it trying to create a new account? I already had fully-working accounts before I performed an upgrade). Anyways, it decided that I should use a KDE Wallet. Whatever - I'll bite the bullet. So I agree. It asks me to choose classic blowfish or GPG. I go with GPG. I am then given only the option of using the Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key (or back or finish). There is no "new" option - that needs to be fixed. So I select that key because it's the only option. Then a pile of stuff breaks because it can't use that key (I'm not even prompted for a password). I am new user of Ubuntu 16.04 (installed on USB 3.0 stick) and I have come across a problem when none of my wireless mouses (Trust, HP, Microsoft) works on my recently bought USB HUB Tracer H7. My phone seems to work just fine when plugged into it as well as do regular wired mouses. All mouses are also displayed when I check lsusb regardless of where they are plugged. The best I managed was with the Microsoft mouse, after pressing the synching button on the adapter, I got the cursor to jerk around a bit, but even that stopped working after a short while. All help, suggestions or insights you could provide are very welcome.

In bios, it shows up with the full 4096 (4gb), but in Ubuntu 16.04 it only sees 3.2gb. Dropbox has an official sync client for Linux and Google Drive has also an unofficial one, so both can be easily used in a Linux system. However, sync always means copying the contents to the synced local folders, hence using at least as much space.

But is it possible to make PDF files to expire after a specific date? I mean a PDF displayable only for a particular period of time and after that if someone tries to open it he would get only a message like "Sorry, nothing to display". Before, my swap was in a partition of its own, sda7. Now, this partition is shown unused by Gparted (0.00b used).

It's as simple as using gparted to redefine the Windows partition from ntfs file system to ext4 file system for Ubuntu to use. You can use the new partition to store Movies, Music, etc. You can also use gparted to expand your existing Ubuntu storage space into the old windows space but that is a little more complicated.

Take your time and review your options by searching on gparted here in AskUbuntu and over the wider inteet with google.

I recently updated to Kubuntu version 16.04 from version 14.04 after getting the upgrade notification. It successfully downloaded and installed, but after rebooting the system, it went straight to a terminal login screen. Even after successfully logging in, the GUI doesn't auto-load.

As an old school Bijoy layout user, I tend to use the Old Style typing using Avro, but not in Phonetic — using Unijoy, plus the Old Style typing - which is available in Windows still today by some patches. I've been trying to install Ubuntu 16.01 since the last two days on dualboot with windows 10 on a seperate partition. At first, it got installed but wouldn't always boot on and got stuck on the bootscreen animation and would boot only 1 out of every 4 or 5 times I tried to boot it up. After that, I wen to windows and deleted that partition and tried to install ubuntu 14.04. It installed but didn't show the wifi networks so I removed that too and now I'm unable to install any version, every time I boot into the usb drive, it gets frozen at the ubuntu boot screen and doesn't proceed to the setup. Short version: How to coect an Ubuntu Touch device with the inteet via a (debian) desktop PC, while still enabling adb shell coections to the device? Long version: My (debian) desktop PC stands in an area with quite bad WLAN reception. However, sometimes I want to coect my Ubuntu tablet to the inteet while having an adb-shell open at my PC, for example when setting up a libertine chroot. Because the WLAN coection frequently is interrupted, I would prefer to coect to the inteet via my (debian) PC which has a stable LAN coection. Note that the coection should not interfere with an adb-shell or an alteative has to be proposed, as otherwise I still would be unable to use a shell from the desktop PC while having good inteet on the tablet.
